"The chemist who invented Vaseline was trying to save his whale business."

He spent the 1850s in the whale-oil trade, and watched petroleum make it worthless. He then noticed oil-rig workers using a waxy drilling residue on their cuts. A decade of purification later, in 1872, he patented it.

What's Inside

Between them, the seven touch every function group above and every one of the seven product types this category now contains, including both sides of the antiperspirant/deodorant split. Aluminum Chlorohydrate and Sodium Bicarbonate together finally give the deodorant/antiperspirant illustration — quoted in both earlier volumes' Question Zero sections — its own full treatment. Polyethylene is the first material in the series whose cosmetic use is actively being phased out by regulation.
