Buy Volume Six — Hygiene & Cleansing"The first material in this entire series, and the last, are the same reaction."
In 1823, French chemist Eugène Chevreul described saponification precisely: fat treated with an alkali splits into fatty acids that bond with the alkali to form soap, releasing glycerin as a byproduct. Volume One's first material profile was glycerin — Chevreul's byproduct. True Soap, profiled in this volume, is the same 1823 reaction, viewed from its other side.
What's Inside
Coverage. The four materials touch every product type in this category except intimate lubricant, which is addressed directly but deliberately not through a standard profile — see below.
Teaching value. True Soap finally gives a Question Zero example, referenced in every prior volume, its own material. Triclosan and Ethanol each demonstrate a different way a label's trustworthiness can fail — one through a formally rejected safety-and-effectiveness claim, one through outright fraudulent substitution. Lactic Acid carries this series' only example of a word being legally prohibited from a label, the exact inverse of every "unregulated terms" table that came before it.
What is deliberately excluded, and why. Intimate lubricant is not given a standard material profile. It's regulated as a medical device under 21 CFR § 884.5300, cleared through 510(k) substantial-equivalence review rather than an ingredient-safety pathway, and its labeling doesn't carry the INCI-format ingredient list, percentage disclosure, or certification marks this entire method is built to read. It's addressed directly, in its own section, with its own honest explanation of why — not silently dropped, and not stretched to fit a shape it doesn't have.
