Origin
Dimethicone is a silicone polymer — a synthetic compound with a silicon-oxygen backbone and methyl side groups. Silicones as a class were developed primarily by Dow Corning starting in the 1940s for industrial applications: electrical insulation, lubricants, and sealants. Their entry into personal care was a later application of materials already in production for other industries.
Why It's Used
It spreads easily and forms a breathable, water-resistant film on the skin's surface. It does not penetrate or interact with the skin biologically — its effect is purely physical: it fills in irregularities, reduces friction, and slows moisture loss. It is non-comedogenic at cosmetic use levels and is among the most thoroughly tested ingredients in the category.
Elsewhere
Silicone polymers are used extensively in industrial lubrication, electrical insulation, construction sealants, medical devices, and food processing (as anti-foaming agents). Dimethicone specifically is used in pharmaceutical preparations and is approved as a food additive in some jurisdictions.
