- Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)
- Formula
- TiO₂
- Function Group
- Colorant / UV filter / opacifier
Origin
Titanium dioxide was first identified as a pigment in the early 20th century, and commercial production began in the 1910s. It rapidly displaced lead white (lead carbonate) as the dominant white pigment in paints by mid-century, owing to its higher refractive index, lower toxicity, and better durability. Its use in cosmetics followed its establishment as a safe, stable white pigment.
Why It's Used
In makeup, titanium dioxide functions as a white colorant and opacifier — it provides coverage and lightens the overall tone of formulations. Nano-sized forms are also used in sunscreens as a physical UV filter, where their small particle size reduces the white cast. The regulatory status of nano-TiO₂ has been under review in the EU since 2021, with updated restrictions applying to spray products.
Elsewhere
Titanium dioxide is the world's most widely used white pigment — it appears in paints, coatings, plastics, paper, textiles, and food (as E171). Nano-TiO₂ has photocatalytic properties exploited in self-cleaning surfaces and air purification systems.
