Origin
Beeswax is produced by honeybees (Apis mellifera) to construct the honeycomb cells in which honey is stored and brood is raised. Humans have harvested beeswax alongside honey for thousands of years — it appears in ancient Egyptian cosmetic preparations and was used in early lip preparations. It remains one of the few animal-derived waxes still in widespread cosmetic use.
Why It's Used
In lip products, beeswax serves as a structuring agent — its melting point (around 62–65°C) is higher than body temperature, so it contributes hardness and body to the stick format. It also provides a degree of occlusion, slowing moisture loss from the lips. Its natural variability means its properties shift depending on source, season, and bee species.
Elsewhere
Beeswax is used in wood polishes, shoe polishes, candles, food coatings (it appears on some fruits and confectionery as E901), and in pharmaceutical preparations including sustained-release drug formulations.
